The local handicraft expressions in this part of Apulia are really numerous. They reflect the ancient socio-economical organization of Terra d'Otranto that is mostly made up of rural communities and economically self-sufficient and active small cities. Thanks to skilled artisans and to the presence in loco of the necessary raw materials, they were able to produce whatever they needed.
Look at the valuable Lecce papier-mâché carvings , the objects made with wrought iron (beds, railings, candelabra, etc.) and with wood (kitchen tools, furniture), the pottery and terracotta handmade articles (famous those of Lecce and Cutrofiano), the loom-woven fabrics, the delicate embroideries and the original pieces of Lecce stone and, finally, the wickerwork (wicker and reed works, carpets, etc.)
