The marvellous Baroque Lecce with the extraordinary Basilica of St. Croce, Piazza Duomo, the Castle and the Amphitheatre and the Roman Theatre. The enchanting medieval village of Otranto with its tortuous narrow streets, the huge Romanic Cathedral with its incomparable mosaic floor and a fascinating crypt, the Byzantine church of St. Pietro, the imposing Castello Aragonese overlooking the sea. The beautiful Gallipoli, a sea town, with its Baroque churches, the Hellenistic fountain and the Angioin Castle. The Norman Abbey of St. Maria a Cerrate (Squinzano) seat of a first basilian then Benedictine cenobium.
The archaeological site of Roca Vecchia and of Vaste-Poggiardo with the crypt of Sts. Stefani, the Cisternale of Vitigliano; the Centopietre of Patù; the rock churches with their splendid Byzantine frescos of St. Salvatore in Giurdgnano, St. Marina and Cristina in Carpignano Salentino, Crocefisso in Ugento and Celimanna in Supersano. Acaya (suburb of Vernole), an original square-layout fortified citadel of the XVI-century. The uncountable dolmen (a construction with a horizontal top slab placed on stone blocks or "pietrefitte") and menhir (rectangular-section stones placed vertically to the ground), mysterious sacred monuments probably dating back to the Bronze Age.
Among the most known there are the menhir of Giurdignano and Pisignano, the dolmen of "Stabile" in Giuggianello and "Scusi" in Minervino. The specchie, huge stone heaps that can be dated back to the Arcaic or Messapian Age having the function of defence or home or used as tombs. Famous is the Specchia dei Mori in Martano. We conclude with the various fortified farmhouses mainly spread in the hinterland, and the variety of villages of Terra d'Otranto whose small historical centres house unexpected baronial residences, castles and mother-churches.
